Yes.
The overworld and event scripting are too similar to the originals.
The game also doesn't incorporate future gen Pokemon in any way outside of Sevii islands, and doesn't allow your Pokemon to evolve if they're cross-gen evolutions.
The game actively tries to be as samey as possible.
There have never been good Kanto remakes, or Kanto games and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Forgot to mention how ugly the overworld in these games is.
Ruby and Sapphire weren't exactly lookers either, even when compared to their handheld JRPG contemporaries, but FRLG were super ugly.

They are flawed, but I like them. I wish they didn't need to exist and you could connect Gen I and II to Gen III, but here we are.

I understand the intent to replicate the experience of the originals but the very nature of the modern mechanics makes that impossible. I think the biggest flaw is not even letting you access the later gen evolutions or Pokemon until late/post-game. Locking the new content until then was also a mistake.

Sometimes I like re-playing Gen 1, sometimes I like re-playing FRLG. Despite the intent of being an upgrade and replacement, I feel they are more like a fun alternative.

In hindsight, remakes were a bad idea and they should've just figured out a way to transfer from Gen II to III instead. Now once we've seen how ORAS, LGPE, and BDSP turned out we now no longer want any more remakes because we're afraid they'll just ruin the next region (Unova). But at the time of HGSS people actually liked remakes and considered them the definitive version of their respective regions.

Her premise that the only reason hardcore fans had to play them was to trade Pokémon to Hoenn games might be true for her, but as a general statement is wrong. I am only one year younger than her, played FRLG at launch, and at the time I had played all previous mainline games. Going through Kanto again in a modern version of the original games was a lot of fun for me, and I don't think my experience was particularly rare.

That's not even the worst of it
I for the life of me cannot understand why they let the evolution process start for something like golbat->crobat every single level up only to stop because of the arbitrary restriction
Its bad enough its locked until completing postgame, but why on fucking earth did they implement it in a way thats constantly dangling it in front of the player as a shitty reminder?
Did they lack the capacity to code it so the evolution wouldn't at least start until you were able to access the next form? fuck

I actually really like FRLG a lot.

My only problem with FRLG is that there is unused game data suggesting that there are unused routes and locations for the Sevii Islands (in particular areas for Four Island that were scrapped very late during development). So people are speculating some content was cut due to time constraints. Which sucks if true.

I just hope that these unused areas weren't cut from the game, but we're simply replaced with better areas in the final product.

IMO. BDSP is even worse than ORAS and LGPE because it's the most pointless remake yet, though none of them are particularly good. Unlike ORAS, BDSP doesn't have an updated roster of Pokemon up till that point and unlike LGPE, the graphical improvement isn't enough to justify their existence. It's missing the major features which justify a remake as a remake. They're also the first games since Crystal to not introduce a new Pokemon or even form of a Pokemon because they're saving all of those for PLA.

The only bad remakes so far are LGPE. The worst characters recently are Hop, Allister, Avery and Hau. They should be stabbed with kitchen knives. I like May, Bea and Klara better.

It's not a terribly ambitious remake and it came out way too soon, but I like it. It's basically Gen 1 with the infrastructure and gameplay of Gen 3, which is enough to make the game a better experience than RBY.

FRLG are good games, but a lot of that s due to the source material. Sevii Isles were a ton of fun though imo.

It's sad to say that "not fucking up the original" is the minimum for a good remake in the Pokemon franchise

whatever. imo with the exception of hgss, they're better than all the others but they were way too faithful to the originals. and then they make em different in worse ways with a couple of forced tutorials, and the tms being the same as rse (which, sure they did that because you could trade tms but still). at least move tutors still teach most of the good moves. that said, i prefer the originals because at least there ya got some fun glitches.

Nobody wants a return of Go’s catching mechanic as the only way to catch Pokémon. The only place it could’ve been somewhat fun is in the Safari Zone, but not everywhere

That’s the exact problem with BDSP. Remakes aren’t meant to be 1:1 copies of the original games, they’re meant to be reimaginings of them with a modern twist on them, even throwing in a splash of the third version. You get to experience the story again but not exactly the same way that you did back in the originals. Even Let’s Go managed to not be exactly the same as RBY or FRLG
