Daily reminder that the "consider the time period" argument is unfalsifiable. There is no reasonable way to know what Pokemon Gold and Silver would have looked like if it was released in 2021 or vice versa with USUM. I know there will be cope, but it's true.

This is such an intellectually dishonest argument. Last year I played over a period of a few months Soul Silver, Diamond, Black 2 and Shield, in this order. The last one was braindead easy compared to each of the other ones, which, if not exactly difficult, aren't really easier than the average modern video game (except Soulslikes)

LMAO hell no. No Pokémon game, ever, is hard except for maybe Colo/XD. It's literally a baby tier game, and it keeps getting dumbed down every generation too. You should feel embarrassed if you even had a little bit of difficulty with the game and you aren't a child

Halo on normal is harder than any pokemon game. Pokemon isn't designed to be difficult, hell with the exception of Unova's champion tournament it isn't even designed to be particularly challenging.
Most games didn't even bother giving gym leaders EVs and the AI isn't advanced enough to be a threat.
Pokemon is and always will be a game about collecting colorful animals that can later be sold as merch.

I don't know about easier. It's a turn based RPG - it will never require any real skill. Same reason FF1 will never be "hard", no matter how many releases and balance changes.
But at least in the early games you had could manage how to distribute experience between your team. With exp share and level based exp scaling, that whole aspect is on auto-pilot too. And it feels really unearned if your Magikarp levels up by just being there, never even having seen battle at all.

the best strategy is to dump all the exp into your starter

The best strategy is to catch anything will Horn Drill and use X Accuracy, but I know what you mean. In the end, you had 1 strong pokemon though, whereas now, everyone in your team gets free xp, learns moves and evolves despite never having been used at all. This is very off putting.

Team composition in XY and ORAS postgame was far better than anything from Gen 7-- the major caveat between the two being that Gen 7 also removed a significant portion of gameplay features.

Well, for starters, turns out Marowak and Araquanid really benefit from the stat boosts offered to totem Pokemon. That and the fact they're also given pretty high EVs make them pretty tough foes. Pretty sure they also used trainer AI despite the lack of a trainer, I noticed their seemingly intentional attempts to use super effective moves. I might've just gotten super unlucky though.
Those two are the only two I lost to at all, the rest I managed against, but it was more of a challenge than most games have given me in the past.

Dude, for the most part they're all hyper offense oriented. Then there's the fact that all of the alolan pokemon are incredibly slow.
