I believe Gold would be a more purist form of Gen 2 representation compared to Ethan representing Gen 4. Ethan would get Togekiss but not Gold. Due to the more rustic nature of old Johto, I can see Gold raising Togepi to Togetic and then either releasing it or handing it over to someone else for studies.
