Besides, they care about the same major anniversary dates as the West does given that we all use a base-10 number system in which multiples of 10 are a big deal and 100 even moreso being 10x10 and the first triple digit number, 25 is special because it's 1/4 of 100 (pikachu being the mascot was pure coincidence, it was organically popular when the games started getting attention in Japan so they rolled ahead with it) and Masuda himself mentioned they're pretty close to 1,000 pokemon when discussing the logistical nightmare keeping them all in the game was after the shift to 3d - 1,000 not the much closer 900 or just saying they were over 800, 1,000 - because it's a significant nice round number that's easy to appreciate and pretty damn big for a bestiary in a kids' game.
