While Gen 5 and Gen 3 removed features from the previous Gens, they still streamlined the actual gameplay, e.g. box-system overhaul in Gen 3. Gen 8 may have a worse roster of Pokemon than Gen 7 and Gen 7 may have more railroading than Gen 6, but the games themselves have only gotten more and more streamlined (excluding the Online). DP, in spite of being the most ambitious games and introducing features like Wi-fi connectivity and physical-special split, was the only time when the games were clearly less streamlined than their predecessor, Emerald. The slow DP engine for Gen IV drags down Platinum and HGSS to an extent as well.
