the worst part is that it still has a bunch of shitty NPC roadblocks on top of that like the grunts randomly blocking mt coronet's path to snowpoint city, the painting blocking mt coronet's path to the summit, the grunts randomly blocking mt coronet's shortcut to celestic town, the psyduck, the sunyshore power outage guy. Fucking gen 1 had more creative roadblocks than this and it had three fewer HMs.

besides, it puts more pressure on the player to properly teambuild if you don't want to dedicate a member to have as a particular hm slave (of which the game gives you several)

the only game that legitimately puts pressure on the player to "properly teambuild" is SM/USUM since there are actual boss fights in the game designed to hard counter you if you only use one Pokemon.

It generally disincentivized proper teambuilding because you have to give them shit moves. I've said this before and I'll say it again, when developing the Gen 3 Pokemon structure they should have programmed certain Pokemon to just have the ability to use HM's without needing the specific move. This way it would incentivise you to somewhat diversify your team without filling up your move slots with garbage you'll never use. Like, surf is an alright move, but it's much more convenient to have a Pokemon that can use surf rather than one that has surf, you get me? And if your team doesn't have a Pokemon that can even use surf, you need to build your team better. Great compromise, especially with all the odd Pokemon that can learn surf.

I think Rock Climb and Whirlpool were the only ones that gave me a problem in HGSS. Rock Climb was bad in Pt too because I taught it to my Infernape eventually.

If you like a challenge and can tolerate cutscenes, then go for USUM.
If you want an overall good experience that balances both playability and soul, then go for Platinum or B2W2.
If soul is your priority, then go for HGSS.

If you've never played a Pokemon game before, start with HGSS

HMs are good in that you should be using *your* Pokemon to navigate and travel the world. They're bad because they take up move slots. They should be field abilities, but they should be performed by your Pokemon instead of a random Bidoof.

No it isn't, the fuck? It has the same amount of HMs as Sinnoh and overall the same placement too. In Sinnoh, it's mostly concentrated in Mt. Coronet while in Hoenn it's concentrated in the sea routes.

HM's could be good because it adds new exploration. games like monster hunter stories do an HM like system a lot better then pokemon. the ride features were a bit better then how previous games did HM's however monster hunter stories does it better is because you are not restricted to the rented pokemon, instead you use your own monster to travel around. sword and shield decided to abandon all of these systems and just have a bike (lmao). and legends arceus seems to have the same pitfall as the sun and moon rented pokemon where we have predetermined pokemon to let you fly/swim/ride

Even Twilight Princess got tons of shit for having items that were only used a few times max outside of the dungeon they're obtained in. At least in Zelda, all items have their own inventory slot rather than them competing for each other.

The Psyduck are fine because the player has agency in getting past them. But yeah, everything else is kinda redundant when there are so many HMs. You can tell they didn't want to just place cut trees in the middle of places like they did in Kanto, but they really should have
