Everyone says that like sprite work is easy and are usually people who don't draw or realize what state the majority of the game industry is in vs. inidies who sorta make pixel art (good shit, not stick figures, thumbnail sprites and Mega Man sprite edits) in their spare time are few and far inbetween and usually aren't people with industry level positions.

And if you are, you're not common enough to be cheap.

Dot artists are as common as swordsmiths since it's an antiquated skill that isn't expected to be industry standard. Game Freak is also known for its turnaround rate since it's a safe recruiting spot for game design graduates to get their experience and branch out. Even if (and this is on the odds of getting struck by lightning 5 times, 2 of which are during shark attacks) by some chance they had a team of nothing but dot artists, they're still likely to leave Game Freak since the demand for dot artists is still high enough to be competitive and write your own wages. Pokémon has always and will continue to be an example of minimum viable product, the games are just a seed that grows more product. From a business standpoint, putting too much of a budget behind the games seems to be putting the cart before the horse since the franchise's revenue is also carried by merchandising.

Good pixel art is time consuming and talent pool is minuscule so you can't hire more monkeys to do job faster.

3d is faster and lot cheaper on long run.

It was never 3D models vs 2D sprites.
It was always good art vs bad art.
Hand-drawn art is better because it gives more freedom to the artist to make their vision.
Look at games like Skullgirls, where they just used 2D non-sprite hand-drawings, and it looks beautiful. Look at Guilty Gear Strive with how they're using 3D models to make beautiful animations that look just like hand-drawn ones.

3D usually looks bad because it's chosen as the fast way. But if that's why you're doing it, you've already lost. You're trying to save effort, so you won't put any more to making the 3D models look good.

It's more like 2D exaggerates because you can cheat in details (good drawing bends the rules, etc.) and 3D needs a ton of moon logic to replicate those abstractions because its flaw is that it's too accurate (what you see is what you get)

You can train 25 people to animate a model.
You can't reliably train 25 artists to draw the same level of quality.

3d can look good as ever when setup properly and have decent art direction. Light, shaders and even a bit of baked shadows do lot of job.

It don't even need a retardly high poly model just right amount of trickery. GF never use light properly and lot of crap look like it's on mat_fullbright.
