i haven't played a mainline pokemon since crystal, which one would be best to get back into the swinging of the things

Play emerald. Its the definitive hoenn/gen 3 experience. You can see how different it was from gen 2 for better or worse and decide if you want to keep going as most of the gens get progressively worse from there.

OP is boomer and I am boomer. As a boomer, I say please don't play anymore games. I hate Gf for killing my pokemon back during gold and silver and it is more of the worse things with them. Gen 3 is ass and only hoenn babies and faggots that ar eless than 25 recommend it. BW1 and 2 are not too bad but every game after that is shit. so they will leave you unsatisfied.
I say you save yourself the trouble and play literally any other franchise, or if you must, just play FRLG and HGSS then quit.

Its better than ruby and sapphire in every conceivable way except the champion replacement. Updated mechanics like abilities having out of battle effects, More battles with many as optional doubles, including both teams as well as the final rayquaza decending cutscene, the battle frontier.
