I'm going into this saying that the only Pokemon game I've ever played is Pokemon Stadium for the N64 a good 20+ years ago.
I'm looking to get a gift for my nephew, but it seems to be a consensus that these two games are among the worst in the series, and I was wondering what exactly makes them so bad?

Only has the original 150 so it has the worst variety of pokemon to choose from since the original red + blue.

I was debating between a pokemon game or Mario Party, since he's already got a switch and his friends come over to play Mario Kart a bunch.

The fact that it’s a full price switch game with about as much content as a gameboy game. The fact that they made it one to one with a gameboy game. On the switch. but if it were only like 20 bucks I’d honestly consider it a good game cause it’s good for what it is

The bulk of the issues with let's go, much like USUM, have to do with it being related to the other games in the franchise.
On its own is an ok game, but not worth the price.
If your nephew didn't play a previous game AND you're willing to pay the price then its perfectly fine.

It uses Pokemon GO catching mechanics instead of battling wild Pokemon. It also is mostly limited to the original Kanto Pokemon.

Which might not seem like bad things to someone outside the franchise, but for many, it's a significant downgrade. There's very little reason to play it if you're already into Pokemon.
To be quite frank, if I was getting a Switch Pokemon game for a little kid, I would go with SWSH or BDSP, as shitty as those games are

that said, those games you posted are Good, they're Great for kids even, there's an optional drop in drop out co-op mode you could take advantage of to play with your nephew whenever you two are together, idk what more you could want.

If it's for your nephew then they're fine. They're literally baby's first Pokemon game. $60 is a bit much though. Try getting a used copy for $30 if you can

Not quite true, it also has variants of some of the original monsters, so the total number of unique monsters is a little under 170 or so.

Fourthing Mario Party. Let's Go does have multiplayer aspects, but they're limited to two players and pretty shallow.
