Mostly polish but meaningful content and backtracking, too. Gen 5 is basically Gen 6 but if it were executed better and Gen 3 and 4 are great for all of their other side things to get lost in like contests, secret bases, and optional areas.

DP were insanely rushed despite being delayed so Platinum was a good idea to save the perception of Sinnoh while it was still fresh-- and it worked.
BDSP don't apply since they didn't fix the issues DP had that Platinum did, but that's the magic of third versions, being able to revisit the games from the ground up to fix them.
USUM not fixing any of the issues from SM was deliberate since Gen 7 onwards are just gimped on purpose, but since Gen 6 happened before the big shift in direction that the series was taking there's a strong chance that a Z version would have been just as ambitious as Platinum or Emerald.

Are you baiting? Megas have zero relevance in XY. If you're more concerned about that I would recommend ORAS or even LGPE since they both use the mechanic.

i went from 250 pokemon and two regions on gameboy color to 600 in full 3D with mega evolutions player customizations skating about and a very good online experience

ultimately if you don't have friends to trade and battle with though, you're missing out on what pokemon is

You bring a fair point, but there were other things that Gen 5 executed well in its own right. Again, the real tragedy is that Gen 7 removed all of the QOL and improvements that Gen 6 built up.

Some aspects were improved, while other things not so much. Map scale and pokemon appearances are way worse (there are exceptions, an anon will inevitably come in and post the 5 pokemon that were improved) and the legendary features such as amie boosts and universal xp share start here

How does that excuse Gen 7 for not refining the mechanic? If SM actually polished the foundation Gen 6 set, then why didn't they fix the problems with it?
The point is moot. Gen 5 had a better foundation than both, XY is to blame for not being an objective improvement and SM is to blame for being even worse than XY

It's also just a worse version of the Join Avenue from Gen 5. In that game they let you pick out what stores you wanted to host in your Avenue, and you got to watch them grow over time as more people visited them. Gen 7 just gives you a random roll.

I'm one of the people that routinely defends Gen 6 and I would be perfectly fine with no Z if Gen 7 were proper successors instead of being downgrades.
Zygarde's role in Alola could have been infinitely more interesting than it would be in Kalos if SM were good games.
The third version model is antiquated ever since BW2.

They were. From a purely objective and technical standpoint Sun and Moon are massively less impressive than the games that came before it.

Which is even worse given how much of a downgrade Gen 6 already was from Gen 5. Which makes Gen 7 seem almost deliberately bastardized in an attempt to lower the bar and keep it there. XY weren't great by any metric, all they had to do was meet that bar and they refused to do so.

There's no reason to play XY other than for multiplayer, sure. I'll give you the PSS (which remember, frequently lagged the game and made people crash) but aside from that the Alola games are objective improvements in every way.

Because it would at least give it the credit of adding something substantial to the series that was built on. Zygarde could have easily been incorporated into the Ultra Beast plotline in order to provide closure for those who played a Gen 6 game.
Rather than this, Sun and Moon just removed all the improvements Gen 6 made outright on top of giving zero closure to the plot points that Gen 6 built up like Zygarde's relevance, Eternal Floette, and AZOTH.

Not really. Their first mistake was making a game that didn't match up to BW. Refusing to do so a 2nd and 3rd time just piles on even more mistakes and it doesn't help that Gen 7 and 8 got progressively worse.

Why the fuck should Zygarde play any role in SM's story? Have you lost it? Zygarde is the trio master of Xerneas and Yveltal. It already makes little sense that it's in Alola of all places, it would make even little sense for it to be incorporated into the Ultra Beast plot.

First of all, Gen 7 was mostly an improvement over 6, which is not saying much but still. And secondly, again, why the fuck should Gen 7 clean up the mess that 6 made? It's Gen 6's fault that it did jackshit with all of the interesting lore possibilities it had, so much so that it has to rely on ORAS and SM to be even half decent. No other Pokémon game was in this bad of a state. Even DP, which are probably one of the most rough games still had most of its lore in it, and Platinum only expanded on it. A full background on the Kalos king and the Kalos war? AZ Floette? Xerneas and Yveltal's home locations? Zygarde's formes? All things that should've been in XY or at least Z. But oh wait, they out all their priorities on ORAS instead for some goddamn reason.Why should SM, a brand new generation full of it's own goddamn plot and lore, have to do the homework for XY? It's more than enough that they gave refuge to Zygarde. Keep in mind that Gen 7 was one of the more Innovative gens as far as things go, so that's another hurdle. I still don't get why you always push the blame and responsibility for anything Gen 6 did on 7. I don't see any Unovafans shitting on XY for not expanding on the Original dragon etc. Is it jealousy?

Uh no? The main point of the natdex, which is to enable the player to own all the pokemon that exist is still in SMUSUM. It was only technically removed in LGPE and formally in SWSH

First of all, Gen 2 didn't "save" Gen 1, let me remind you that Gen 2 wouldn't even exist without 1. That isn't the state of a generation that needs saving. It was, for the most part imo. Just the fact that it tried to breathe new life into the series with amazing concepts like UBs, Totems, trials, regional formes etc gives it a special place in my heart. I'd rather have a game try to do things a bit differently, even if not 100% successfully over a game that does things that have already been done a million times before but infinitely better.

It's not just a couple of lines you fucking autist. And they actually considerably expand the lore compared to dex entries in previous games which would usually just be rewordings. There are 409 Pokémon in the Alola regional dex in USUM, so just a few short of the XY regional dex. And yet USUM added brand new dex entries for almost all the Pokémon (including the entries for different formes and Mega evolutions) while XY reused ones from previous games for almost all of them. That does make up for not having the natdex, because guess what. You can still own all 807 Pokémon known at that time in the games. Which is literally the point of the natdex anyways

I have replayed them both very recently, DP before BDSP came out and XY just a few weeks ago. DP have tons and tons of flaws, but XY have them in heaps as well, but without a third version as a bonus. And XY's flaws are more fundamentally deep rooted than DP's mostly technical/mechanical flaws.

The 3d models, Amie and affection, the new exp share, the region design being a tourist trap amusement park, mega evolution in execution and much much more. And all of these except the last one are recurring issues in the franchise at this point

Because not only are the shitty on their own, but they've become series staples at this point and have spread their poison.

It means that the region looks, feels and is very poorly thought out, to the point where it feels like you're travelling in a theme park with different biomes rather than an actual region.

I wasn't talking about power creep, don't care really. I was talking about how they were shitty as an idea but especially in execution, where most of the Pokémon that got them didn't deserve or need them while the ones that did got nothing.
