Gen 2 is objectively the worst. It has terrible balance in the world design and the progression of the game. Many of the new Pokémon were exclusive to the post-game, which itself was highly lacking.

They sacrificed a lot to add Kanto in but it damaged the game.

That's my view.

Ever since they became old enough to use the internet the people who grew up with HGSS have insisted that they're perfect games and anyone who disagrees is lying or jealous. We've only gotten far enough from them that that has slowed down in the last few years, leading to different opinions being heard more before they're shot down.
It only looks like there's a trend of Johto hate because the hate that was hidden before isn't anymore.

It's only recently that people started shitting on them by nitpicking minor flaws and blowing them up to make them seem worse and twisting positives as negatives in an attempt to make Johto look bad.
