you have chan and lee which are punch and kick based pokemon, each of which pretty okay at what they do

then somehow you have a weird spinning top that kicks sort of but not really and is just pure crap

Durant is unironically a scary good Pokemon for casual battles. Set up a Hone Claws with its Hustle and just tear through teams with its buffed as fuck Attack and actually decent Speed.

Its base stats are all the same which means its Attack and Defense are equal by default. Just nuke both EVs with berries right before it evolves and fight something that doesn't give either to finish the level up, or just avoid fighting things that give them entirely to save on berries.

Hitmontop is cool but it's one of those pokemon that has a gimmick... but doesn't.
What I mean is that Hitmontop has a unique fighting style, it's like breakdancing as a martial art, and this works pretty well to distinguish it in the anime and probably the manga, or any other visual medium. In the games though, the only way they translate this is two underpowered signature moves, both of which are shared with other pokemon by now.
It's sorta like Hypno. Hypno's "gimmick" is that it hypnotizes things, that's what it does best. In the games, hypnosis has wide distribution and Hypno does not have any unique interaction with the move. Its abilities include sleep immunity, flinch immunity, and the ability to read the opponent's moveset. I think a lot of pokemon could really easily be made more distinct if they just leaned harder into their schtick.

My favorite thing is that Hypno and Drowzee are based on dream-eating baku and eat dreams, and have never in their entire history learned Dream Eater as a natural level up move.

Speaking of casual, if you get Z-Moves or Dynamax moves involved, they benefit from Hustle with none of the drawbacks, meaning any of those moves from a Durant automatically get a 1.5x boost. For free.

Hitmontop is a capoeira sambist.
The martial art has moves similar to breakdancing and revolves around rapid spinning strikes mainly but not exclusively the legs and their big ass moves makes it difficult to land strikes on them which is why Hitmontop's evolution relies on an even defense and offense, him being bulkier and more versatile than the others also kept him a decent mon though out the years which makes him the best hitmon and the boss hitmon, so fuck you and Hitmonlee.

I never forgot about Hitmontop, he's my favourite fighting type and I try to use him whenever I get the opportunity to do so, it's a shame that he and the rest of the hitmon family are just kind of mogged by poor stats. They all need a good boost but it's unlikely we'll ever see that but still he's lovable and fun to use.

Same, it is a shame he is so shit. And you can't even get him in the Johto game until after the eighth gym so he is a hassle to train if you want to actually use him.

Everytime I replay gsc I reset until the odd egg gives a tyrogue, then goldenrod sells vitamins to balance his stats out. Hell if I'm feeling particularly autistic I'll even level that tyrogue to 20, get hitmonlee and then breed a Tyrogue with High Jump Kick all before Whitney.
