HGSS unironically. The original GSC were meant to be the last games of the series, similar to how HGSS were the last games before GF started really experimenting with all the nu-Pokemon shit from gen 5 onwards.
HGSS were also the most soulful remakes.

i just figured if i got a switch then i could grab one version and get the other for my friend and we could do some kino duels for a bit, that was how i got back into pokemon years ago

i skipped gens 3, 4, 5, and then i got a golden triforce 3ds zelda a link between worlds bundle and pokemon x, and me and my friend raised teams and went head to head, i managed to take one of his pokemon down i swear

IT HONESTLY DEPENDS WHAT YOURE LOOKING TO DO. fuck caps, dont wanan retype. But be honest and figure out what youre looking for in a game, machanically as well if you don't just wanna go full nostalgia. Are you gonna go all out and 100% a game? breed, etc? Want nostalgia? find out which game has the most of what. In this case, I'd say play HGSS or ORAS.

OP specifically asked for a game for a nice send off to end the series and HGSS clearly fits the bill.
Gen 5 and BW especially represent a NEW START to the series, the opposite of a "send off"
Your fault for not giving a proper, relevant answer to the question but rather just looking for an excuse to shill your favorite region.

Just play Gen 5 OP. It's a love letter to fans who grew up with Gen 1. Ignore the discordraiders. It's the only gen and even someone in his 30s who has never ever played pokemon could enjoy.

If you want specifically to relive your past experiences then play the Johto remakes HGSS.
