How do the DS era games rank in rarity/price

I wanted to buy HeartGold since I still have a pretty new mint condition DS lite. At the time I really wasn't into Pokemon (last game I played at that time was Crystal). I started playing back in 2014 during Gen 6 but I feel like I'm missing out since I never played Gens 4 and 5. I did manage to play Emerald and FireRed on an emulator a couple months back and they were pretty good. I want to ultimately buy the generation 4 and 5 games but I know they cost a pretty penny. Is there a good starting point for generation 4, as in which of those games I can get the cheapest. Also the same for gen 5, I know those games have sequels so I'm kind forced to buy both. Are some versions cheaper than others?

Just play plat and one of the two Johto games.
Or you could just like..Emulate.

This. Diamond and Pearl are unironically in contention for the worst Pokémon games in the series but Platinum is good.

So Platinum thanks. I heard a bunch of people say that DP runs slow so I think that's the better option. I already emulated Emerald and FireRed. I might try emulating but since my DS is still pretty new I want at least try to buy one gen 4 game.

You're not missing out on anything by emulating Platinum. I pirated that shit and played it on a flash cart back in the day. The only one where not owning it is objectively a lesser experience is if you can get HGSS with a Pokewalker (kind of a tall order). The Gen 5 games have a similar functionality (for the record, the carts contain an IR connecter to make wireless connection faster and easier) but due to you having only one DS and probably not knowing anyone with the games it's not super worth it either. If you don't necessarily mind not buying the games but want a similar handheld experience, a flash cart is also good, as I mentioned earlier. I can't recommend a good one though, it's been so long since I got mine and I'm sure it's not a great model since I have to go through a rigamarole to use it on my 3DS. Speaking of the 3DS, you can actually load DS games off the SD card if you hack your 3DS and install something I think is called TWLoader. Basically, if money is a problem (and given some of the prices I've seen HGGS b/w Pokewalker at, that's entirely possible) you have plenty of options.

it's called TWmenu (twilight menu)
op mentioned using a DS lite though, and i doubt homebrew really exists for those things (though you can try flash carts, which i've never used)
if you do have a 3ds head over to https://3ds.hacks.guide/ and once you're done google twilightmenu 3ds or something

There arent any real variations so to speak of the North American version if thats what you meant. You can buy japanese versions for cheaper (not sure on prices for those) but authentic north american copies are at least $60-80 for dp, anywhere from 100-140 for plat and about the same if not more for hgss. Complete in box with manuals is probably more. If you want a pokewalker too for hgss expect to spend at least 200. No idea about PAL.

Thanks man this really helps. Yeah I'll have to look into that to see what brand of flash cart to buy. I was at a flea market once and found a pokewalker in pretty good condition with an Ekans still on it. Do the pokewalkers only work with the original game it came with? If then I guess I can't do much with it. If so I can just consider getting a used HG or SS.
