I was playing blind, so I didn’t optimize my team. I suspect the Crystal level curve can work if you know what to prepare for, but if you are playing blind, there is a good chance you’ll have to rework your team multiple times and the wild Pokémon are all like 10 levels under who you’ll be facing.

Depends on how you play, but probably BW since those games lack the nu EXP share but have scalar EXP so if you’re falling behind in levels it gives you more to catch up, or if you’re getting to far ahead it gives you less to let the level curve catch up with you. In my personal experience tho? Definitely either Ruby and sapphire or platinum. The way I play (assemble a team of 6 throughout the game, usually having a full team or at least 5 members by the last few gyms) these games always have me just above the levels of the trainers, and just below the levels of the gym leaders, exactly as it should be. For platinum specifically it’s almost too good to be true, whoever balanced the game did a really good job of it.

Absolutely the fuck not.
The only games with a good level curve are Plat and USUM, and MAYBE Emerald.
Everytime I play B2W2 I always start lagging behind starting from Lentimas Town, even with battling every trainer. B2W2 are really unfun to play because of the level curve. In my last W2 run I was level 52 by the time I reached Iris (level 59).

I felt pretty comfortable probably the most in SwSh

I never went out of my way to level up or do anything out of the ordinary. I dont even think i focused on fighting every trainer in every route either.

The XP from catching and regular story stuff + EXP all made it so that all my Pokemon were around the same level and they were just fine in the main game.

In the Johto games you usually end up underleveled unless you grind rematches or wild Pokemon, given the actual leaders and e4 are really easy compared to other games. A big differences lies in how the player deals with wild Pokemon. A lot don't grind them and run from basically every battle to save time but that means they miss out on some EXP and EVs

I've actually beat Red with low 50s while doing a nuzlocke cause the game is so pathetically easy unlike the later challenging ones but that doesn't mean the curve was fine

Is there any proof of the Johto leaders and eltire 4 being significantly easier? Levels alone don't mean anything since as you said exp is hard to come by since you need to grind. Later games tend to give trainer better movepools but its also easy to get over leveled in those games (and its easier to optimized your team).
