Yeah, every type has these weird monsters.

Dual types not included, but nearly every flying type is just a normal bird. Literally the most unoriginal typing.

flying/normal is technically better than pure flying, since no effect ghost moves is more important than not very effective fighting attacks. this always drove me crazy too never understood why almost every bird is normal/flying, but from a competitive standpoint, its a good typing

It makes sense in-game because they are usually early route mons and STAB normal moves are great for early game

idk there's some weird ones here and there and it's probably better than the alternative at least. that bein, normal type being filled with a bunch of bird mons like how water type is filled with a bunch of fish mons.

I mean flying was only a secondary type until flying type arceus and among those with it as a secondary type there's dragons, bats, bugs, a dandelion fluff, a scorpion, a mantaray, a rock, a rocketship, and a baloon. The first pure flying type that wasn't an alternate form was a genie cloud god thing, and since then we've only had a handful of pure/primary flying type pokemon. There's plenty of creativity, the birds are just the most obvious and being common familiar animals make for good early game pokemon that can be fantastical versions of what kids would expect to find just leaving home to explore their town.

Nah I'd take the fighting resistance any day. By the time you encounter ghost mons you can just use a dark type move or a dark type itself which can actually threaten ghost types back

STAB normal moves as coverage really don't complement STAB flying, I mean normal is resisted by the same things that resist flying, so a pure flying type wouldn't miss it. In earlier gens it helped out more since your flying type attacks were limited, but in gen 3 onwards they seem to get stuff like wing attack quite early.

for me personally, i like to have a dark, a normal, a ghost a steel a ground and a flying mon on my team so i can switch in on no effect moves. sometimes i have to make conpromises but switching a normal pokemon into a shadow ball is really satisfying
