I think gen 3 and 4 both tremendously improved upon gen 2. gen 5 was the first gen not to make any marked improvements in the game design but I still really like it because it's just solid.

Johto is a great region, with a great soundtrack, and the quintessential Pokémon story (read: almost no story - and that's a good think), but holy shit it actually has the worst newmon dex they ever put out. For my money Hoenn is comfier because I can actually build several different teams of newmons that isn't complete ass even if Johto is the superior region.

Compared to Johto they did. Callbacks like putting Pikachu in every game don't count. If you don't have the option of going back to Kanto in every game, you're no better than Yokai Watch.

because gen 2 is the only game intended to be a direct sequel; it included the previous region and even the Player character of the previous game. BW2 and USUM could also be considered “sequels”, but they’re more of a broad continuation of the same region solely in terms of story and (potential) world building of said region; they don’t hit as hard as Johto+Kanto—maybe BW2 would be better argued for one if it included Hilbert/Hilda via that trade link shit the game included, but it’s just wasted potential as is.

Who said this? I don't want to use an Ariados that uses leech life until level 63 and is outsped by every Kanto mon in the game. There is "competitively viable" then there's just using irredeemable shitmons to force yourself to use the new dex. Almost every Johto mon is nearly unusable in the base game.

Because of money and greed. They realized they could just release the same game over and over again and that morons would lap it up. There was no incentive for them to improve the game mechanics or to give the hardcore fans what they wanted. If anything it was the opposite, they are incentivized to underdeliver and to give as little as possible, thus lowering development costs, increasing development speed and keeping fans hooked by not allowing them to overindulge. Instead they're just keeping you hooked by playing off your nostalgia, knowing the games are like a drug to you autists. Feeding you breadcrumbs here and there, while leeching off you with yearly releases and the hope of something actually decent.

And ariados' special gimmick is to slow you down (spider web/scary face)and hit decently with night shade. It's good for Bugsy with poison sting for status, and slowing down his scyther and clearing out bellsprout tower. Unironically it's meant to counter your other bug mons, almost as if it's based off a real life spider
