Graphical style is way more important than graphical fidelity. There's a reason the original Wind Waker still looks good compared to so many contemporaries. That also having been said, the only really objective problems (since art style is subjective even if I think a lot of them could look better in some ways) a lot of Nintendo games have is that a lot of them don't really hit a good stable 60FPS which is more or less the minimum for good reaction times. It really doesn't help with something like Sword and Sheild having a lot of things tied to framerate (which is considered a bad practice but I'm sure has some practical applications for the end user in some action orientated games).

Narrative start? My guess would be gen 3 because gens 1 and 2 actually looked pretty good graphically compared to other gameboy/game boy color games. When and why did people start just accepting pokemon games looking bad or not up to current standards.

The narrative started when Masuda said they cut the dex to focus on graphics and animations, then SWSH drops and looks like shit + reused the same animations from the 3DS. Now GF has dug themselves into a hole because people, who in the past excused Pokemon's bad graphics, are now zeroing in on them since we aren't getting the national dex back, ever.
Shills cannot cope with people criticizing their beloved franchise so they say graphics don't actually matter, or that its just an art style, or whatever they need to to defend it.

And they aren't, gameplay and crafting crafting enjoyable experience should always take precedent, that being said, now that the series is 3D and imagination can't fill in the gaps, GF need to step it up.
