No, Red's a researcher in this one, Blue's the battle autist aiming for Champion. The rationalfaggotry doesn't manifest how you think it does—the art of battling in general is well thought-out in the story, trainers aren't idiots like wizards are. They're resourceful and clever because of how dangerous their world is, and secretive because they're all competing with each other. They know about breeding, they give coded commands instead of yelling out attack names, and they fight dirty. The worldbreaking rationalhax come into play when they discover new methods of catching pokemon, lore about their universe (distortion world fuckery and ghost types), and—a big focus of the story (because Red's a psychic in this one)—psychic powers and their applications.

It's pretty character-focused and a slow burn, evident by the fact that it's got like 90 something chapters and nowhere near ending, and also very grim and dark—the pokemon world depicted here is way more dangerous than that of most fics. Think Worm x Pokemon x HPMOR for the story, basically. If you're into all three, you'll love it, if not, then maybe not.

Usually you can attribute it to one or more of these factors:
1. Poor Planning
2. Imitating Others
3. Understanding Fiction Websites

1. When you don't properly plan something out, word counts balloon because you're trying to wrangle it back to a place you can drive the plot forward, or because you're chasing too many rabbits without recognizing some of them aren't worth the time.

2. Many writers see other writers with enormous word counts attached to prose and think, "well this person is very clearly better than I am based on metrics, so I should imitate them and write very long pieces of prose too." This is born from failing to understand writing or analyze the writer they're imitating, and it creates an endless feedback loop of writers copying writers copying writers copying writers.

3. Finally, there are some people that understand how fiction websites work - the longer a work is, the more often it refreshes its position on page 1 of any given site, the more people see it, the higher (generally speaking) its metrics climb. This isn't guaranteed, of course, there are some works that are pushing 300k or 400k and they're generally overlooked as far as their metrics would indicate, but it is nevertheless an observable trend.
Coupled with the above is the fact that breaking things out into sequels means you suffer audience attrition as people fail to continue to the next work in the series. Even on sites like AO3 which have series functionality built into them, people will simply smash what should be 3 or 4 separate books together into a single story. Often at the expense of the overall quality of the narrative or cohesiveness of the experience. And usually because they're chasing the dopamine hit from seeing metrics climb.

There are other factors that come into play, and you could argue they are more or less relevant than what I've mentioned, but these three are the most common ones I see.

How do you imitate someone's writing? Art I can understand—you study their lines and the colors they use and then autistically try to match them, but writing? I don't think it works the same way. A line's always a line, and a specific style of drawing eyes looks the same to everyone. Meanwhile, one passage means completely different things to two people, and style in general seems much harder to define. Seems hard unless you can read their minds and figure out the intent behind every little thing they put on paper.

It can come down to broader strokes than literally trying to match prose style one for one. Story structure, grammatical habits, even character voices can be inherited from things people read. It can come down to wanting to replicate a way in which a scene they read or watched was presented. That's why people who only consume anime write fics that feel insufferable to read. They imitate the writing style of a visual medium without understanding the things that separate it from written prose.

How does everyone handle reading something bad? I know some of you are probably mature enough to not give it another thought, but it really gets under my skin. I wrote a review for an OP who baited a fic of Cynthia getting BLACKED because I was angry that I read the whole thing. Name a mention of a mayor outside Drayden WITHOUT going into ashnime territory. Gym Leaders being the literal leaders of their cities makes sense. They fend off wild pokemon and protect the citizens in times of crisis—take Black and White for example. Who else would you have organizing police/militia and overseeing security matters, but a Gym Leader? They're public figures that people trust, they're tough, and they're competent. The Elite 4 and the Champion even more so—on nearly every game, whenever there's a world ending catastrophe or the villain's scheme is nearing completion, the Champion is there, involved in some way.

My headcanon is that the Elite 4 and Gym Leaders are basically representatives of a parallel government with different but overlapping spheres of responsibility than the people who actually run things day to day (so a combination of options 2 and 3.) They're expected to handle dangerous wild Pokemon, crime involving Pokemon, issues touching directly on training, etc., not infrastructure or tax policy. But they're public figures and that's a pretty broad scope of authority, so they might be more involved in other things depending on their personal inclinations, like Wattson and developing Mauville.

Whitney has a retinue of tard wranglersgym trainers under her who can handle logistics while she leans heavily into being a pretty face/good in battle.
Flannery's situation is much the same, plus her grandfather was an Elite 4 member, which helps her popularity and legitimacy.
Maylene's widely respected for her strength, and like the others, I'm sure she has some sort of PR team that helps make up for what she lacks.
Even if they're newbies at their game, they hold the trust of the people.

I actually can't think of a single gym leader in the franchise who's actively despised by their city, not even the villains like Giovanni.

The problem with this is that Pokemon apparently have roles in society besides battling and even Pokemon battling has purposes besides entertainment. Putting aside wars in the past involving Pokemon, wild Pokemon routinely cause problems. You can't even travel safely without having Pokemon of your own because of them. So being a good Pokemon trainer means something different than being good at a real sport, and the League can have authority and influence just from being an association of trainers. Unless things having to do with Pokemon besides battling for entertainment are all handled by other organizations and the League is entirely devoted to that one aspect.

E4 are exceptionally strong Trainers employed by their respective League. In contrast with Champions who acquire their position by winning and defending a title, E4 are selected by a panel of League officials based on merit factors such as an excellent record over a sustained period of time.

E4 members serve a variety of functions, including:
1. Facing trainers who wish to challenge the Champion to ensure that only the best are eligible to challenge for the title
2. Acting as public ambassadors for the League
3. Representing the region in international competitions
4. Using their battle skills to serve the people of the region, fight crimes if necessary etc.

E4 positions are highly coveted as they receive high salaries and have access to League resources, meaning they don't have to worry about financing their training solely with their prize winnings. This means they have the freedom to dedicate most of their time to important competitions rather than prizefighting regularly or running a Gym to make ends meet.
