Instead of Grass/Water/Fire what if the player was presented with a binary choice, Flying or Ground. Or even given no choice at all and is partnered with a default starter as was the case for Yellow. Stadium 1 and 2 mixed up the formula with Umbreon/Espeon and Eevee as the starting pokemon.
What if gym leaders specialized in STATS instead of typing. What if they had themed teams like just dog pokemon or just pokemon that didn't evolve. What if Gym leaders were pokemon. What if certain types were impossible to catch.
What if a new game offered a branching storyline based on player choices. What if loosing battles was a permanent consequence that cost resources instead of forcing the player to rematch after "whiting out". What if there were more side quests that rewarded the player with rare items, pokemon or secret areas.
What GF does is the barebone minimum. New region, new mons, new moves, better tech, but its all the same shit
