I don't mind It in hoenn, diving is actually kino and the event islands are nice touches to the exotic feel to hoenn.

Why the need to do it again but in a bullshit half-assed pseudo orange island gay anime arc in frlg was unnecessary. I'm not asking for jhoto but why not take the time to flesh out Kanto instead of it being a literal 1-1 square tile replica.

Depends.
If the water routes are between nearby places, I don't like it, because it breaks the flow of movement, especially with the animations to start a surf.
If the water routes are their own things to explore, rather than just being in between things that I want to explore, then I like them. That's why I liked them in Hoenn.
Dive is a cool addition, too.

Water routes where every tile is an encounter discourage exploration once the encounters just become an annoying time sink. They encourage you to find the fastest most direct route. But that's true of caves too, what really makes water worse is the dogshit encounter table on all of them. They do this so they can lock decent water pokemon behind better fishing rods for the sake of paced progression, but what it means is what should be a 15min route is actually an hour or more of the same two pokemon.
