Is Ash's Pikachu in the anime male or female? Or is it ambiguous?

I think before Gen 4 (Diamond/Pearl, the gen that introduced gender differences) early season episodes of Pokemon may have attempted being ambiguous. But after gen 4, Ash's Pikachu is confirmed a boy.

Even before that, there are several instances in the Indigo League anime where characters refer to Ash's Pikachu as a he. I can't provide specific citations, but I've been watching through the first season again and happened to notice it a couple of times.
