Making a Pokemon ROM Hack

i have gotten myself a new laptop and have always wanted to make a ROM hack. But i have no clue where to start i did my research, but advance maps wouldn't work on my laptop. any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

add all pokemon to the game, make a few extra routes and caves, change the starters, make event items purchasable

Everyone uses the disassembly which is just as good as having the source code. You can do EVERYTHING with it! Advancemap is obsolete don't bother with that one..
