Not cowardice, sensibility.
You kill her off so her image as one of the most evil and cool villains in the franchise lives on forever.
Instead of having her stay alive, and then either having people constantly cry to have her back in later seasons or writing her into later seasons and flanderizing her or making her some shitty soulless zombie like what's happened to Ash and the rest of the legacy crew.
It's honestly one of the best moves the anime writers have ever done and they should put their foot down on more characters.

In regards to J herself, that Riolu makes sense, as do the Regis of course, but the Spinda? How the hell is a Spinda rare and valuable?

That's a job for the villains of that particular series.
Also, the trio themselves needs to be retired at this point, completely soulless characters.

Fuck no, the ashnime references in the games are cringey already, an actual character imported from the anime would be a mess.
There's a reason that wasn't done since Yellow, they look incredibly out of place.
