Hilda/Hilbert had cellphones and were more sociable so if they were deliberately going on a journey they would have called their mom and been like "Hey, I just wanted to let you know that I'm going on an important journey, and may not be reachable. I love you!" But they didn't, which suggests it was more of a sudden thing, like they were chasing a Pokemon and went through some sort of portal or ended up in cryostasis or something.
