Its ears reach about four feet. Pretty fucking short for a whip. Using a whip requires a lengthy windup. Won't be able to build up significant force while moving and swinging its head.
You should just be able to run in from outside its range and grab the thing before it can act. Think it can pull away from you? You're probably at least three times its weight.
This is not some one ton killing machine breathing fire and lasers, it's a prey animal with stinging deterrence.
