Is there a more normie opinion than this? All the best studios / teams didn't even exist in the 90s. Pokemon was always bottom tier animation and still is.

and what'd make a good, soulful anime Pokémon anime is more screentime for its supporting cast instead of Ash and Goh running into generic shit 98% of the time.

Most of the "soul" projected on the Pokémon game designs and the look of anime can be chalked up to "because it was the 90s." Even so, modern Pokémon is a bit more generous on frame count than the first season. Not that the original series didn't have its moments.

My favorite episode of the show was a Pidgey filler episode from Johto that didn't have any battling. I think the show's appeal isn't the battles, but exploring the world. Be that traveling around visiting different places, or SM's method of placing the entire series in one town with a large cast of recurring minor characters going about their day to day lives.

the pokemon anime has always been the worst long-running anime in history.
think of it this way: imagine if a legendary trashy anime like ex-arm or garzey's wing was allowed to just keep running... and running... and running... for almost 25 years and counting. it would STILL be better than pokemon just for having a lot of unintentionally funny "so-bad-it's-good" moments. pokemon is a joyless perpetual toy commercial and it will never be allowed to be anything more than that.

Survivorship bias. You only know about anime relevant enough to be brought to the west back in the 90s. Or anime relevant enough to still be talked about 20 years later. There was a lot of trash, real trash, in the 90s. They are all buried in the annals of history. No English subs, let alone dubs. Nobody remembers it anymore.
