Say what you will about X and Y Kanto pandering, but at least Sycamore gave you a choice between all three Kanto starters at once rather than forcing Charmander on you and later forcing you to choose between the other two in a DLC. No, Leon leaving his Charmander for you in his house after you beat him is not the equivalent of Steven leaving his Beldum for you. That was fine with me because it was the first game where the Champion left you a Pokemon and it was the only way to obtain Beldum at the time, which gave it some novelty. It's not even the same as Shauna trading you a Kalos starter either because Charizard is an old Kanto Pokemon and has become a second mascot by now due to all the shilling it gets.
