Is there a scientific reasoning as to why the Johto games contain considerably larger amounts of SOVL and comfiness than the other games in the series?

Is it the music? The region? The artstyle?

RGY were the games that popularized and caused the craze

GSC is the themepark made to cash in on the mania. They just so happened to do it in the right way. There was no 'you'll buy it anyway' mentality back then so they made a good game

It was the only game designed the way it was. Gens 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, and 8 are stand alone pieces and are supposed to be games on their own.

I'll give gen 5 some credit, as it follows the same forumla, but branches out in different ways.

Gen 2 was wholly a continuation of gen 1, not a stand alone piece. It's comfy because it knows it's not in the spotlight. It's a rural region, overshadowed by it's neighbor. Nothing is happening. It's like a comfy country town.

It's the region itself. Design-wise it has a very cohesive, laid back theme. It's taken further in the remakes, which have probably the best colours besides B/W.

Sadly, this is the only good thing about Johto.

Except Johto was in the spotlight when it came out. Johto and Kanto are clearly intertwined But in GSC Johto was the main focus of the games, the Kanto part was just extra added to make the world more interconnected. Remember this was when most westerners didn’t even know Kanto had a name, meanwhile…

Jotho is most definitely rural, but it only really became overshadowed due to the anime fucking up by spending too much time tying lose ends that should have been resolved in the Kanto arch and the higher ups at Game Freak and TPC hating the Johto starters because they were afraid they’d take attention of away from the Kanto starters.

Effort on top of building off of actual iterative sequels instead of generations that nix random features for the sake of uniqueness.
The interviews with Morimoto about HGSS are a STARK contrast to the interviews given by Masuda for ORAS. Morimoto talking about how they "got greedy" with what they could include and his ingame NPC saying how it's no good to just make the same game vs Masuda complaining about how everyone's busy and on their phones and the absolute virgin "faithful remakes" that were BDSP developed by a company with little experience.
It's no wonder HGSS to this day still dwarf other Pokemon games in quality and quantity of content

The countryside and lower stakes make it feel more like a trip through the Pokemon world than any other game in the series. The Day/Night system, days of the week, and to a lesser extent, phone calls, help with this immersion.

I'm not reading a Johtofag cope essay about a failed team wanting to control all pokemon with the radio tower somehow, and also crying for Giovanni-sama to come back. The sudden rise of stakes when these fucks have been utterly irrelevant is a good example of terrible writing and pacing.

That's only what the Director has been lead to believe. Remember that he has been locked in the basement for an unknown period of time, with limited knowledge of what's going on outside and what Team Rocket's motives are. If you'd have actually played the games then you would know that Team Rocket's goals in Johto are:
>Use the radio signals to force Magikarp in the Lake of Rage to evolve so they can sell them for profit
and
>Use the radio signals to contact Giovanni and let him know they are back in action

The fact that they fail with both tasks is not a "flaw" or "mistake" on the writer's part. It is a testament to the disorder of Team Rocket, and shows us how much of a mess they are without a proper leader. It shows that Giovanni was the only one with more than 1 brain cell's worth of brainpower in Team Rocket, and the moment he left after the events of RBY, the whole operation was doomed to fail. The lesson learnt from Johto, was that without a proper leader, a team is completely disfunctional. It shows us the desperation and effort a team without a leader will go to, and how badly they can fall.

You NEED to play the games.

Team Rocket was actively experimenting with radio signals as a means of controlling Pokemon. The signal that made the Red Gyarados evolve just happened to come from Mahogany Town. Just because it wasn't what they intended to do at the Radio Tower in Goldenrod doesn't mean there wasn't a real chance of that happening.

Pokemania died a natural death but I do think R/S stilted the momentum and drove the franchise into relative obscurity. I say relative because it was never really gone, but it was significantly muted.
