If you're playing hardcore enough to care about status in gen 1 you should be picking Bulbasaur anyway since it's the most busted starter of the three there and even if you don't you can just get Oddish/Bellsprout and have a Vileplume/Victreebell ready by the time you hit Celadon which is way more bang for your buck, especially since Victreebell is a good cut slave. Gen 2? Get a Paras. It's available just as early as Butterfree, and learns fucking SPORE and False Swipe (via breeding). It's your one stop shop for status and catching Pokemon AND a cut slave, shit dude you can even teach it Flash. Cut, Flash, Spore, False Swipe Parasect is an almost mandatory pick-up on any of my Gen 2 runs.

The minute you hit Goldenrod you can take a 15-20 minute break to go get a Pokemon that's incredibly relevant for the entire fucking game, or just waste your life on a worthless Butterfree.
