>>49082581I think one of the reasons gen 5 is so hated is a case of bad first impressions. A lot of people likely had negative feelings towards it before playing due to it only having new pokemon, and the opening of the game is the weakest part.
First off, the starters are generally considered one of the weaker sets. Then you're stuck with shitmons like patrat, purrloin, and pidove before the 1st gym (Lillipup is not really a shitmon, but you might think it is if you're playing the game blind since it's a route 1 normal type). Then you are basically forced to use the gift monkey to beat the 1st gym because your starter is at a disadvantage and your only other options are the aforementioned shitmons. A lot of people don't like the monkey designs, and it also feels kind of lame that it's the only good option for beating the gym, since yhe main appeal of pokemon is constructing your own personal team.
I could see a lot of people basically writing the game off right there. But now, with the benefit of hindsight and knowing the whole game, it's easy to just power through the crappy beginning of the game because you know there's good stuff coming later.
