I've never played Gen 2. Should I play base crystal or crystal clear? I know crystal clear is open world and changes a lot of stuff but I'm curious if it's an overall better gen 2 experience

Crystal Clear is fundamentally a remix of gen 2 that works better if you already know the games. If you don't know them, you'll be missing out on a fair bit,and getting confused as well.

Play Polished Crystal or HeartGold for the better experience for newcomers
