I never really knew how rare Feebas actually was until maybe the past 5 years. When I was a child I often see Feebas in RSE and DPPt. I played those games a lot just fucking around with stuff. I guess I was just lucky.

I've never seen a wild shiny pokemon in over a decade of playing pokemon games. I got pokerus two or three times though.

It's to create a sense of rarity without just relying entirely on RNG. If you understand the mechanics it's a bit of a pain but it's managable. If you don't it's a huge pain in the ass. There's a lot of stuff like this, like the HGSS Safari Zone. Some people generally prefer control and think literally wasting time on random chance is bullshit, but others would rather just leave it up to chance and not have to go though a whole rigamarole. There's merits to both design ethos, but when it comes to control some amount of transparency would be fucking nice. If you don't know how to control something, it can feel even worse than just RNG.

My condolences. It makes me grateful for finding a shiny Fomantis today in the Lush Jungle in Ultra Sun, albeit in Citra emulator. That said, I have a CFW 3DS, so I can just overwrite the save and transfer the Fomantis to Home.

I'm currently playing a hack with 1/1000 odds and I'm finding shinies every 15 hours or so. I think that it's perfect, any less than probably 1/500 and they just wouldn't feel special. But I do think once you get over 1/2000 it's a bit much

I do really like the mini game in USUM being able to find rare and shiny Pokemon for being better at the mini game is honestly pretty fun. I still rather have a simpler shiny rate though

Earning it would be something like paying attention to hints given by NPCs/the Pokedex and using them to figure out how to determine which spots are special.

Yeah if you think about it, unless you're speedrunning and doing no exploring or grinding or anything, you're easily going to encounter over 500 Pokemon, and I'd safely guess about 1000. That would mean you would typically encounter 5 shinies a run, which doesn't even take into consideration actually looking for shinies. Most people would easily get 10+ a run at 1/200 odds. Even casuals would probably get 3-5. They wouldn't really be special. I'll never forget the first time I found one it was intense, like I'd won the lottery. Now playing games like ORAS or this hack at 1/1000 odds, the experience isn't as intense but it's still awesome. But if I'm inadvertently encountering 4-6 a run without really even trying they'd become really standard and honestly expected rather than very unexpected (which is what makes them so special in the first place).

Probably the Discord thirdie who has been obsessed with gen 5 for years.
He's been doing it less since people have wised up are starting to either ignore him flat out or call him the stinky third worlder that he is, which infuriates him.
He recently started shitting on Gen 2 as that gets him replies, but like moments like this, he goes back to shutting on Gen 5 when he thinks he can get away with it.
He (pretends to,) love gen 6 so he deleted it when he realized his mistake.

I think the main problem with Pokemon and rarity is that they tend to go to extreme measures with it.
It's either extremely obtuse, like finding out the regigigas catch requirements in ORAS is from a vague statement from a random ass NPC in an optional town. It's so ridiculous that even Pokemon's second biggest shill, Joe Merrick couldn't believe the steps to get it.

And like you said with the HGSS safari zone literally no one would figure out on your own to catch a Beldum/Metang you have to waita half year with these specific tiles in a specific biome. Then you have to deal with their insane catch rate with RNG layered on top of RNG ON TOP of more RNG to catch because Game Freak can't be bothered to change one value even though the Beldum line can be caught in the wild for every generation after it's introduction.
