Honestly it sucks
>lack of challenge in the main story
>Have to go to extraneous lengths to get good online battles

>repetitive breeding
>lack of story
>reused models
they reused N64 models up until the wii, and in 2010 they were all replaced by "future proofed" modeled that are kinda shitty and soulless
>we've seen better developers make better games with the Ip than gamefreak.

I tried to get back into it after skipping gen3 for better games, and it was shit tier back in 4th gen. It's even worse now. Just play mystery dungeon explorers of sky

I would say try frlg or emerald. You can see how the series changed from gen 2 to 3 and if you prefer the first two gens frlg is a good way to experience kanto.
