It just so happens that Game Freak is so shit at balance that they created Gen 2 Snorlax the single most broken and overcentralizing Pokémon in OU history who completely invalidates special attacks.
However Typhlosion did became “discount Charizard” Gen 3 onward and even then, Eruption which just good enough to make it worth using in the same tier that Charizard existed in Gens 4 and 5 and even allowed Typhlosion a small niche in Gen 5 VGC that Charizard didn’t have.
Of course all that was thrown out that window when Game Freak when full-retard with the Zard shilling and gave the damn thing 2 megas while intentionally shitting in Johtofans faces by purposely skipping the Johto starters when handing out megas.
It’s actually amazing how that if you read Typhlosion’s Smogon entries, its worth as a Pokémon inversely correlates to the amount of Kanto pandering in the franchise.
