Polished crystal was pretty mediocre. It didn't fix the level curve, and the midgame was still a bit of a slog especially the boring as fuck team rocket stuff. It didn't fix the weird pacing with Kanto and it still wasn't particularly interesting to explore. Not even having a quick way to fly between regions is utter shit too.

At least the variety and availability of mons is good, and the gyms are a lot more interesting. It's just such a shame you eventually start arriving at them way underlevelled and have to grind against shitmons for tiny xp forever to have a chance vs the now competent gym teams.

The red and green fights in question would be interesting if you didn't reach them 20 levels underneath and have no good options for grinding. They even have perfect evs/ivs so it's near impossible to win if you're underlevelled. Red++ had a way better level curve since switching out mons gave you full XP.

What's the best way to experience gen 2? It seems like each romhack has some fatal flaw. Perfect Crystal doesn't have a physical/special split, Polished Crystal removes several Pokemon from the Johto dex (including the entire Hoppip line!), and Crystal Clear needs no elaboration. How is Prism?
