It just wasn't hard or challenging or difficult for adults to play - especially those who'd cut their teeth with 80's-era games and gaming mentalities, where this turned out to be a kid version of RPG's most had played on NES. Kids got lots more entertainment options since Pokémon launched and it adapted to this by making their games even more kid friendly (as the explosion in entertainment options coincided with a paradigm shift in the upbringing of children from the 2000's onwards), to ensure they'd at least play to the end and possibly buy some merch, even if they don't stay in brand past 3 years. Sorry you can't accept growing older and out of Pokémon's core demographic. But they only ever cared about the kids, that's why they continued releasing new games and merch as often as they were physically able to.
