Because, for all their fuckups, they're somehow still insanely dedicated to their villainous cause. It's admirable, but also kind of tragic because they've proven they can be good at literally anything EXCEPT what they're being paid to do. If they quit Team Rocket like they had wanted to early on in the series, they probably could have made it big in any other profession, but instead they continue to go on these fool's errands for a man who, quite frankly, does not give a fuck about them. In fact, I'm pretty sure the G-man tried to have them killed in one of the episodes.

Sad but true. From my interpretation on the flashback episodes, they did not tragically fall into a life of crime but rather chose is to avoid boredom. Truly the worst criminals but if you get into details, they are practically terrorists what with all the property damage, etc

I listened to the radio drama, and she seems to still be alive, just perpetually lost in some wilderness while she tries in vain to find Mew. Of course, time has elapsed since then so maybe she truly is dead now.

Society failed Jessie, James, *and* Meowth. They are three extremely talented individuals both alone and separately, Meowth learned to talk like a human being ffs, but the problem is none of them had anyone that believed in them or supported them in anything. Not one person. They wandered aimlessly, lonely and likely depressed, until they found each other. They suck at being Team Rocket members but Team Rocket gave them a sense of belonging that they’ve never had anywhere else. They’re loyal to Team Rocket not because they’re evil or even really have the same goals as Giovanni, but because they can’t stand the thought of going back to the way things were before.

The man is literally a millionaire, at least in the anime canon, so he and the rest of Team Rocket is clearly doing very well. I feel genuine pity for Jessie and James, though as >>49115209 pointed out. Jessie especially, since she lost her mother, and all of her endeavors prior to joining Team Rocket have only ever been met with crushing failure. I kind of wish she would catch a proper lucky break. She succeeds in contests (top 4 in sinnoh, very high in the shit they did in Kalos). They're also all great at running restaurants (the ramen place in sinnoh, the malasada stand in alola). They just need to stick together and not actually try to steal shit and they would be set.

He is, but I think it’s been heavily hinted at in the past, especially in Johto that Team Rocket is having financial problems as well as a shortage of members. It’d be interesting to get more details on what the situation is like currently.

Well, the ramen place was run by an ex-rocket. You might be able to slip under the radar, but since they made an enemy of one of the higher ups, it seems like they wouldn't be able to slip out undetected. Their best bet would be if Team Rocket actually collapsed and they escaped during the fall out to try and live under fake names.

I would like to know more about Giovanni in general. He's been around since the beginning yet we know close to nothing about him. The radio drama was kind of interesting, as it showed how he admired his mother a lot (and even emulates the way she would sit in her chair).

Considering he had no issue sending Jessie and James on a suicide mission in one of the earlier episodes, I don't think it's unreasonable to assume he's also "dealt with" other undesirable members of Team Rocket for similar fuck ups. He's meant to be a yakuza/mob boss after all.

More than one, they’ve made enemies with most of their coworkers.
They’ve sabotaged a bunch of Butch and Cassidy plans,
Matori hates them,
Wendy hates Jessie at least, and probably James and Meowth by proxy
It’s been a while since I’ve seen mewtwo returns but I feel like Domino didn’t like them
They ruined the Lugia scheme
They ruined the red Gyarados plan (they were directly responsible for that one unless you blame the guy that left them in charge)
The only people that might actually vouch for them are Pierce and Dr. Zager. That’s not much considering how many other Team Rocket members they have ticked off in the past.

Team Rocket is actually really competent, the issue is really just Ash and Pikachu fucking them up, they've had numerous schemes where they were wildly successful till Ash appeared. Ironically, they'd be a really big deal if they got as far away from Ash as possible

Probably because Giovanni limits their funds, is my guess. To be fair, I don't remember what the relationship between them is as far as money spending goes, but I'm pretty sure he provides the majority of it. Maybe someone else can confirm for me.

As far as the newer episodes go I’m not sure because I haven’t watched them all, but it was a major plot point in Johto that they were in massive debt to Team Rocket because they had wasted so much of Team Rocket’s money building robots and machines. I’m not sure what their paycheck status was but it appears that there was some sort of system in play where Team Rocket would foot the bill for their equipment, but with Jessie and James they never returned anything to TR so TR was basically hemorrhaging money because of them. That’s why they were always working part time jobs, to try and pay back their debt.

I also think that if Team Rocket members do get a regular paycheck, Jessie and James’s were probably withheld until their debt was paid (which was probably also why they were always hungry). That part is speculation though.

Also the debt had to be massive because when their membership expired, Wendy suggested they not be allowed to rejoin but Giovanni insisted that they were because they needed to repay their debt.

I think he also threatened to get rid of them if it seemed like they wouldn’t be able to pay it back, which would have been his second attempt at having them killed.

At that point I'm not sure who the bigger morons are, Jessie and James, or Giovanni. It would be pretty funny if GSC ended up being the last games like Tajiri intended, and Team Rocket had to disband in the anime because of Jessie and James' constant fuck ups.

I assume that's what they were trying to show at the beginning of the Unova arc. As >>49115749 said, it might've taken that arc and possibly the anime on the opposite direction it went with Tobias 2.0 and the goofy style of SM and Journeys.
