Me too, but I like his GS sprite better than his Crystal look. The harsh colors makes him seem a lot fiercer.

That said, they're definitely cats. I've always just called them the legendary beasts, though.

They do, but they are preoccupied with dogs. They have a disproportionate importance in their culture, and are their preferred quadruped mammal in any given situation. While Entei, Raikou and Suicune are not dogs, only Raikou clearly resembles a tiger either, and with their features being more vague overall, they default to "dog."

The problem is their generally fantastical appearance, which creates more space for people to project their biased interpretation onto the design. I think people's perceptions would start to become more similar if the weird head ornamentations, giant hair, etc. were removed.
