Honestly that's an incredibly realistic take on if part of your job was giving a trainer starter pack to any kid who scheduled an appointment for one. Like, you see probably a dozen of these fucks a week, taking time out of your actual job to deal with them, and you apparently have to deal with restock times so you need to deal with kids not getting the one they want and apparently sometimes just give them random box filler you happen to have lying around if all of them are taken and telling them to deal with it and get the fuck out. And it's fucking baffling that you're even handing out a dex since Oak's the only fucker whose field of research actually pertains to the context of a Pokedex.

I'm sure the overqualified Pokemon expert who's just trying to research Mega Evolution or whatever who agreed to take on babysitting duty so he can get grants for his research certainly sees that as part of his job and not an unavoidable chore taking precious time away from his research and other duties.

My headcanon is that only a few priviliged kids (whose family are either rich/influential or whose parents know the prof personally) gets to receive starters
Regular ones have to get their shit together and most often fail with their shitmons and end up having a regular garbage job

All the professors and researchers I've known irl had interns and assistants in charge of tasks similar to handing out trainer starter packs and such. That's why I think handing out starter packs might be one the Pokemon professors' key responsibilities, as weird as that sounds.

Key difference is they had assistants doing that for them. If you're a Pokemon professor you're stopping everything you're doing to give little Timmy a speech and a starter pack. Not to mention you're arbitrarily left with needing to tend to the starters in your facility. There's no reason this should be a professor's duty instead of there being a position that just deals with this directly as a full time job, especially when there's already dedicated breeders for the starters. It made sense back in Kanto where Oak was just giving you an actual hand-me-down Pokemon in exchange for filling the Pokedex for him, and in the manga where the handouts are extremely rare and part of a personal project between Oak and his colleagues. In the anime and later games where they just slap it on as part of being a professor it makes no sense, especially when the Pokemon League honestly has no reason to handle it that way.

Yeah, that's what I was saying. IRL, professors have assistants and stuff for such tasks, whereas it seems like just part of the job description of being a Pokemon professor in their world. It's strange, especially after Gen 1.

Yeah, it's a really weird thing, especially after Gen 1 where you essentially are the professor's research intern/assistant as this anon >>49130603 brings up. After gens 1 and 2, the professor shouldn't be in charge of starting trainers out. There should've been some kind of registration process at a local gym or something that provides the trainer with resources and starter kits.

Also, I imagine that in the pokemon world shinies are collected by rich people to show off and they hire trainers to do exactly that and catch shinies for them so they don't actually have to do the work.

Sycamore and Rowan are the odd ones out honestly. Juniper in BW knows the player and the rivals, though the dex doesn't really seem relevant to her research until the sequels where she sends Bianca anyways. It's implied Kukui knows the player too with the video call, and he doesn't really have an assistant until Lillie shows up. Birch knows Norman and doesn't give you the dex until you go back to talk to him at your rival's suggestion.

Kukui is kinda welcoming you into the island as well as treating the grandson of the kahuna well.
Alola's culture is pretty different and it's all about their journey, so it's obvious the professor would actually be involved.
