Then, add more optional areas to explore. The base dungeons are criminally bland and there's really no reason to explore the overworld. Despite being a goddamn circle, Unova actually gives you a couple of optional places to explore. Why the fuck can't an actual complex region like Kalos do the same shit?
And finally, fix the fucking pacing. The game basically dies after the second gym due to the routes, team flare, soundtrack and your shitty friends being bland as fuck. And shoutouts to route 13 for being the single worst route in the entire franchise.
Now that the base game is actually good, just add actual postgame content instead of a shitty fetchquest, battle tower rehash number 5 and the blandest legendary encounters in the franchise. Seriously, Zygarde is the only proper encounter that you get. Mewtwo is in a shitty cutscene tier cave and the KANTOOOOOO birds are just effortless roam encounters because fuck actually making interesting dungeons.
Also, maybe add a fucking legendary trio just like how the gen 1-5 games did.
tl;dr; XY is unfinished and bland. It's only arguably better than SM and SWSH for having less intrusive cutscenes
