Seriously, both Venusaur and Blastoise have higher HP and defense in the regular games(as they should, it makes perfect sense with how much bulkier they are, not to mention Blastoise's shell) so WHY THE FUCK DOES CHARIZARD HAVE 120HP AND THOSE TWO ONLY 100? I'm all for Charizard causing the most damage but there's no excuse for it to have the highest HP.

So tell me /vp/, WHY?

When all other Water types(minus the Polywag line) including Magikarp are weak to electric?
Going by logic, with Gyarados becoming part flying, it cancels the grass weakness and doubles the electric one.

Did you play TCG back in the day? If so, you’ll recall that that the meta at the time revolves around the haymaker strategy of employing single stage Pokémon such as Hitmonchan and Electabuzz that hit hard for little energy cost. Against an opponent running a deck like that, you would never get a Pidgeot out on the field, not most three stage Pokémon.

What you’re describing is simply not worth the resource investment. Why take the time to get Pidgeot on the field? Why dedicate so much deck space to it? When there are completely useful Pokémon that never need to evolve and thus require much less investment to reach their potential? You don’t seem to understand the game and that’s okay but don’t delude yourself, just enjoy the pretty artwork and move on.

How is it ruined? You can play with likeminded friends using decks of similar power levels. It’s no different than the concept of tiers in the mainline game meta. If you want to use lower powered decks and strategies, find a likeminded person to play with.

This is why I love the tcg gameboy game, it forces you to make due with the cards you're given so you end up using crazy strategies you wouldn't otherwise. once you reach the point where your deck is fully optimized to competitive standards it stops being fun

Do you understand what I’m illustrating? In any game at all there are always going to be optimal strategies. If you can’t reconcile with that, then you simply must stop playing games, period. If you can reconcile with that, but want to play with non-optimal strategies, you have to make a social contract with the other player(s) to play with similar limitations and even out the playing field as much as possible, for a game that is one sided for too long will die.

It paints me how a lot my bros are literally useless. I'm perfectly happy playing with a suboptimal deck but I also don't want to feel like I'm completely wasting away card slots. There's a difference between weak and unplayably terrible.

Like what would it hurt if Parasect had 70HP, Spore caused 10dmg in addition to the sleep, and slash caused 50dmg costing an extra grass energy?
Would it have broken the game? No. Would Parasect have become a competitive threat? No. Would I feel like I'm not gimping myself too hard by including my bro in my deck and therefore making me able to enjoy the game more? YES

so lets say you use devolution beam on your opponent. if the card went back into his hand and your turns ends there what is stopping them from evolving it right back again?

so lets say instead you want to use it on your own pokemon, since its not a pkmn power but an actual move mew needs to be active so you can only use it on your benched pokemon. since benched pokemon are free of status conditions its literally impossible to take advantage of the healing properties of the move.

what a retarded gimmick to give your legendary pokemon

remember the damage counters remain the same so let's say you are up against a gyarados with 3 damage counters. if you use devolution beam it gets knocked out since magikarp only has 30HP

it's a very situational move but I guess that's kinda of what they were going for

Hint: Haymaker was only as dominate as it was because EVERY deck ran Energy Removal and Haymaker was the only one that wasn't hindered by it (aside from Rain Dance, but that deck lost to Haymaker almost 100% of the time if it didn't go first).

There's a lot of specifics people don't know about the early TCG. Like, you always hear Haymaker being Scyther-Hitmonchan-Electabuzz, but Electabuzz got kicked out of the dead for Mewtwo almost immediately (and sometimes Fossil Magmar, if they really wanted to fuck with Mr Mime).

And it's not even that there's one swap frog-esque deck in the format that does that. That's just how the game is played now. The game has been power creeped to the point of being completely unrecognizable.

Pokemon has bigger numbers and more complicated effects, but it still plays more or less the same as it always has.

While they still make damage counters (pic related), nowadays most official products just include a set of number dice. Which tournament players had been using instead of damage counters since at least 2000.

Yes.

one other thing, if for example your opponent's pokemon resists fighting(-30) and you use a move where you flip 3 coins each heads causing 20dmg, if I get all 3 heads would the attack cause 30dmg(60 - 30) or 0dmg (each 20 being "applied" individually on the -30)

Weakness and resistance is applied at the very end of damage calculation (that's why some cards say "after applying weakness and resistance" to signify that you do the effect after doing damage). So you'd flip the coins to see how much the base damage is, then subtract 30 from the final number. Also, for the sake of trivia, weakness is applied before resistance, in the very rare case that a Pokemon is weak to and resists the same attack (like Base Porygon).

Also, Electrode isn't bad. Back when base was the only set, Buzzapdos saw a lot of play. It was a deck that plays a LOT like Modern Pokemon, where it would just constantly sacrifice Electrodes to keep Zapdos pumping out damage. The two other main decks at the time, Rain Dance and proto-Haymaker, both had trouble dealing with such a huge beatstick that could instantly knock out anything it wanted.

Which is why Stall was definitely the most popular and oppressive deck when the meta was actually played, right? You definitely wouldn't just be parroting the idea of an accomplished/popular player's blog that he and his small group of friends/high level players concluded literal decades after the cards had been legal in organized play while revisiting the absolutely WILD based-neo format for fun. Nobody cares that in 2017+ you know that you can draw pass, energy removal, super scoop up, item finder for shit, or flip heads on Lickitung more than your opponent; that shit wasn't what people played, wasn't what won, and is never going to matter again and honestly good fucking riddance.
