If they're feeling creatively drained they could do a fan design contest for the fans to contribute some designs in exchange for showing up in a future game as a trainer of said pokemon. Or just outsorce the work to a studio with some fresh ideas.
Hell they could even not feel forced to squeeze out 100+ new pokemon every generation and just do a gen to revisit old pokemon and fill out the dex with baby forms and stage 2 and 3 evolution for pokemon that don't have any. After all its' easier to make a new form for something that exists than make a form for and I'm sure there are plenty of pokemon fans, especially older ones, that would appreciate expansion on some of their favorites. I mean I know it's shaky ground, messing with established shit. But they wouldn't be changing existing forms, just add evolutions and pre-evolutions to them. I mean, for example it probably wouldn't take much effort to give a stage 2 evolution to all the forms in the vaporeon line. And no matter what, I'm sure they'd be more well received than Gen 11s floating combat knife with tacitcal scope that evolves into a floating hunting knife with a sniper scope and a police batton orbiting it.
