I do think games with prerendered graphics looked pretty good back then. Mario had shitty textures, flat sprites, and really low poly so they could make everything a 3d environment. it was never meant to be high fidelity

I have run pokemon ttrpgs before, they're very hard to manage with an the differences between pokemon but still really fun. I had a campaign set in a flooded world after kyogre awakened and the group sailed a ship across what was once unova. Really fond memories of that. By comparison, a campaign like PLA seems pretty easy to organize because the story is pretty obvious
