My emerald battery just died. Clock-based events will no longer work, and I read that even if I change the battery, time events won't work again unless I restart the save after.

How much do I miss out on by not replacing the battery?

I don't know if this would work this way, but could you dump your save, replace the battery, restart, then restore your save?
Either way, off the top of my head, you're only really missing out on growing berries (and contests as a result), Mirage Island, and the daily lottery.

Berries and any chance at getting the mirage island. Your Feebas tiles never refresh, but you can't reliably evolve it.
Just get a DS flash cart or a GBA link cable to back up your save and manually fix the RTC issue.

You can do exactly that. I did earlier this year when I replaced the battery in mine. And the means to back up GBA saves are relatively inexpensive if you have access to other consoles.

You can use a modded Wii(or gamecube) to back up the save over the link cable. PKHeX can then fix the clock.
