It's got perhaps the most interesting story of all, with actually interesting characters, good combat, good difficulty. The ending of BW with N in the Pokémon League stuff is just unprecedented and a step beyond anything else in the series.
I personally prefer Gen IV's graphics and sprites (5 tries to look more 3D but it just looks odd to me, plus the moving sprites in battle are pretty but I don't like how pixelated they are). The games are certainly more pleasing to look at than DP but I think HGSS are the best looking DS games overall.
Gen V is way too bloated with connectivity features and playing the games today means you'll miss out on a ton of stuff. There's just so, so many things that are locked behind all kinds of dead multiplayer/online stuff.
The Pokémon roster is probably my least favorite - they are too edgy and aggressive looking.
It's probably the last generation that is remotely appealing to a more hardcore playstyle and certainly the last to not be drowning in juvenile kindergarden crap.
Finally Unova is just too gritty and artificial for my tastes, I much prefer the more organic Hoenn and the classic Johto-Kanto world.
