GBA had fuck all for game variety. Even amongst other Nintendo consoles that you bought mostly for Nintendo shit, if you bought a GBA you were buying it for Pokemon and maybe 3 random other games.
Even now as a grown ass adult who COULD go back and collect a bunch of older games the only gba games I physically own are either Pokemon, Sonic or a Mother 3 translated cart if I feel like playing it on my SP
Conversely the original Gameboy, (3)DS and Switch all have a ton of non-Pokemon offerings

The GBA was a niche console as others said, as was the Gamecube given the relative popularity of the PS2 and X-Box. 2004 generally wasn't a good time for Nintendo. Red and Blue would also have certainly been the highest selling games on the original Gameboy if most Gameboys weren't bundled with Tetris.

It was so good my dad actually came back home with the milk as soon as mom bought it.
at least I think it was good, my dad punched me in the face and took my GBA to play it as soon as he came back, but I'm just happy I got to see him again.

GBA had one of the biggest variety of games I've ever seen on a handheld. It was like holding a portable SNES. Everyone in my school either had a DS, a PSP, or a GBA. It was basically a part of a handheld trinity.

The question asked was "why did pokémon end up topscoring on GBA?" and the answer was, despite the breadth of games on offer on the system, no fucking normie cared enough about them, save the pokédrones and mariotards (who were severely powergapped by ALL the pokémon titles released on that system). Funnily enough, the 3DS also had the same reception as the GBA and with the exception of Mario Kart doing what it does, Pokémon would have powergapped the field again, proving only retards invested in the brand cared about the system to any great degree.

IMO the 3DS is severely underrated is the best console for Pokemon bar none. It can play the Gen 1 and 2 games through Virtual Console, Gen 4 and 5 games since they're DS games, and Gen 6 and 7 games since they're 3DS games. That leaves only Gen 3 and if you have custom firmware on your 3DS you can play them using Twilight Menu. I know people prefer the DS Lite/DSi screens for playing DS games, but the trade off is worth it.

Another factor people don't often consider is that DS games unironically sound better on the 3DS because of the better audio hardware it has.
You give up some visual accuracy but you get better sound as a consolation prize.

So in terms of user score only HGSS beat the Gen 3 games since Platinum is tied with Emerald. DP did worse in terms of user score than RS and FRLG.

Where did you get this from?
Gen 1 sold the highest on its console except for Tetris but the latter had the advantage of being a pack-in. Gen 2 sold the highest out of all GBC games. The Gen 7 games on the 3DS were the best sellers on that console.

So Tetris was top-selling Game Boy game, cool. Gen II was on Game Boy and we already established Tetris was the higest-seller there and the Gen VI and VII games were both beaten to top spot in the 3DS sales list by Mario Kart.
Ergo, the ONLY pokémon games to be THE highest-selling title on the console they appeared on was RS on GBA.

The actual problem with GBA was the hardware because your options were:
1) original GBA, perfect fit for hands but screen is impossible to see without light equivalent to 10 suns
2) GBA sp, now you can actually see shit but playing anything other than RPGs will cramp your hands in minutes
3) GBA micro, now you can see even better except its now so tiny that your hands will cramp in seconds instead of minutes, still a passable choice for RPGs
4) Game boy player, probably the best way to play anything if you can use anything else other than gamecube's shit controller
5) DS, just lmao

GBA sales were generally lower than what other consoles that mainline Pokemon games were released on were pulling. GBA didn't have an original Super Mario platformer, Mario Kart hadn't reach the popularity it has now until Mario Kart DS (thanks a lot to wireless & online multiplayer, which GBA couldn't do), there wasn't an Animal Crossing (but I don't think a GBA AC would have done as well then as AC ended up doing on DS/3DS/Switch), GBA didn't have a 'killer app' that had huge mainstream appeal and became synonymous with the console like Tetris/Nintendogs/Brain Age/Wii Sports, or some landmark title in another Nintendo franchise like BotW.

There aren't that many good GBA games, and a lot of the flagship titles are ports of SNES games. There is no breakout mega-hit like gameboy's Tetris to compete with, and Mario Kart Super Circuit isn't the must-have title other games in the series are (due to the console's limitations). There's every reason for Ruby and Sapphire to rise to the top.
