That doesn't make it open world. The maps are still the same with a few barriers removed. Play Pokemon Wild if you want a real Pokémon open world game.

this is amazingly interesting at the beginning but becomes uninteresting shortly after the third or fourth gym and plummets into completely boring sometime between then and the elite four. open world pokemon is not a good idea unless you're willing to put a fuckton of effort into it to avoid the pitfalls crystal clear pretty much trips over itself to fall into. and i havent even gotten to just how shitty the self-insert sequences are

Self-insert extra's in the overworld I can look past, that's okay just don't be too edgy or something.
Self-insert Champion is too much, make it a hidden super boss if you want, but as the fucking champion, common man, tone it down a little, at least make a new game to do that, not in GSC.

The worst part is he fucking did *both*. Not only is Shockslayer the champion, you also face him as Champion *again* in a post-game rematch where he's stronger than Red, and then a third goddamn time where he's the really final super secret bonus boss in his own private cave.

Like you said, if he wanted to put his buddies in as random NPCs that you find around the game world, that's one thing, but the guy is just so self-indulgent with it.
