Ash and Brock just become friends with Cheryl, and they want to know when her birthday is. Cheryl gives them a list of 10 possible dates:

May 15, May 16, May 19
June 17, June 18
July 14, July 16
August 14, August 15, August 17

Cheryl then tells Ash and Brock separately the month and the day of her birthday respectively.

Ash: I don't know when Cheryl's birthday is, but I know that Brock doesn't know too.
Brock: At first I don't know when Cheryl's birthday is, but I know now.
Ash: Then I also know when Cheryl's birthday is.

Separate anon here, figured it out on my own before scrolling down. It's July 16th because

Ash can only KNOW Brock wouldn't know because Ash would have to know it's neither May nor June, since both saw the list of 10 dates but only May and June have single appearance day numbers (19th and 18th). Because Brock now knows it's neither May nor June, he can figure out the month between July and August. That means it cannot be the 14th which overlaps with July and August. That leaves July 16th, August 15th, and August 17th. The only way Ash can say he also knows now that Brock says he knows is if he doesn't have 2 choices but instead just 1, meaning it has to be the month with only that 1 option remaining, which is July. So the answer is July 16th.

July 16th.
If she had told Brock the 18th or 19th then he'd have known it was June or May due to those dates being unique. This means she had to have told him 14, 15, 16, or 17. If Brock was told 14 then he wouldn't know which month as there are two with that. This leaves July 16th as the only date that is alone in it's month.

This puzzle does not work. The only days that wouldn’t be possible are the 17th, 18th, and 19th because they have no duplicates and thus would be a dead giveaway to Brock. That does NOT however invalidate the other days in the same months. At best Brock would only EVER be making a 50/50 guess with no certainty.

You don’t already know the answer though, it’s only an assumption. She could have told Brock her Burthday is on the 14th, 15th, or 16th. That can’t be refuted. Brock has to then make a 50/50 guess.

I think you're confusing what the audience knows vs what Brock knows. We only figure out the difference between July 16th, August 15th, and August 17th on the last step when Ash figures it out. Brock already knows the day so it just comes down to Ash expressing it can't be May or June to narrow it down for Brock.

Yes, Cheryl could have told Ash her Birthday is in May and Ash could be sure Brock doesn’t know for certain, because Brock could have been told her birthday is on the 15th, so he is still uncertain whether that is in May or August for example. This works with the 14th and 16th as well.

The only way Ash could know Brock can't work it out for sure is if Brock isn't given a day that doesn't appear just once. But Ash can't know that for sure and would only be an assumption unless the month of Cheryl's birthday, which he knows, is neither month that contains said single day birthday. Knowing Ash thinks this way, Brock can eliminate those months containing single days because otherwise Ash would not be able to know Brock wouldn't already know -- it'd just be a gamble to assume Brock wouldn't know if it were May or June.

Yeah I mistyped, step one doesn’t rule out August. August is ruled out by the fact that Brock is able to be certain if his answer and then Ash too being able to use that information to be Cwrtain. That’s what rules out August, too much possibility for them to both know for sure if that was the case.

If Brock was given a day that only occurs once, he would know what Cheryl's birthday is. So, since Ash knows for a fact that Brock can't know, we remove the months which have the possibility of unique number dates, which are May because it's the only 19, and June because it's the only 18.

Ash could never know when Cheryl's birthday is given only the month, this first clause is irrelevant. However, the second half of Ash's statement implies that the month is not May or June: otherwise, for all Ash knows the birthday could be May 19 or June 18, in which case Brock would know the full birthday from just the day. So, Cheryl's birthday must be in July or August.
