just look at early (gen 1 and 2) pokemon art for reference your art looks like something from gen 3-onwards but the first two gens have a very unique artstyle that sets them apart from the other games

I suggest you look at tons of sugimori artwork of pokemon characters and study them more closely. Look up art he's done or reference sheets/concept arts for characters he's done. They have distinct eyes, mouth, proportions etc. Good luck

Trace & copy some art! It's totally okay to do it for study. Just don't post your studies online (or admit it's a trace over). I only did it a few times and it helped me a lot. I started with Sun and Moon Red.
